Neighbours ask
What makes Dark Woods Coffee different from other specialty coffee roasters?
Dark Woods operates beyond the standard specialty coffee definition with their "Beyond Specialty" model. They have achieved industry-leading B Corp certification scores and have won well over 100 Great Taste Awards, including three Golden Forks. The company develops direct relationships with world-class coffee producers, with founder Damian's extensive travels to origin and judging for Cup of Excellence and Best of Panama competitions helping them access some of the world's rarest and most interesting micro-lots.
What are the founders' backgrounds?
Dark Woods was set up in 2014 by three local friends. Damian was the senior roaster and coffee buyer for a well-established coffee company in Huddersfield, with an international reputation as one of the country's most respected roasters. Paul founded Coffee Community in 1999 and pioneered education and consultancy in the coffee industry, co-writing the City & Guilds Barista Qualifications and acting as lead creator for the SCA Barista Qualification. Ian worked in community housing and the voluntary sector before moving to Namibia, and later became director of a charity supporting farming communities.
What is the difference between specialty coffee and Dark Woods' Beyond Specialty model?
Specialty coffees are those that score over 80 points in the industry SCA grading system. They usually come with better traceability and involve higher prices paid to farms than commercial grade coffee. However, the term can still cover a vast range of prices, qualities and ethics. Dark Woods believes that buying specialty coffee is the bare minimum for a quality-focused and ethical roaster, so they developed their "Beyond Specialty" model to go further in their approach to sourcing and business practices.
How important are the Great Taste Awards to Dark Woods?
The Great Taste Awards have always been very important to Dark Woods, not only because over 14,000 products a year are entered and judged by a wide range of food lovers including deli owners and chefs, but because all the products are blind tasted. Dark Woods has won well over 100 awards over the years, with three winning the highly acclaimed Golden Forks.
