Luminelle
Scan food and skincare barcodes to see ingredient scores, track calories, and log your menstrual cycle
A mobile app that scans food and skincare product barcodes, scores ingredients against EU and California regulations, tracks calories from photos, and logs
About the business

Luminelle is a wellness app for iPhone and Android that combines three functions in one. It scans cosmetic and food product barcodes to generate scores from 0 to 100, based on ingredients checked against EU CosIng, California AB 2762/2771/496, Proposition 65, and ECHA regulatory lists. Each flag links to the regulator's own entry. The app also photographs meals to estimate calories and macronutrients, and tracks menstrual cycle phases with observations appearing on every scan. Users can log daily skin selfies with AI observations, and personalize ingredient alerts for fragrance, alcohol, essential oils, sulfates, silicones, retinoids, acids, parabens and PFAS. The free tier includes unlimited barcode scans, five photo scans daily, cycle tracking and daily selfies. Luminelle Pro adds unlimited photo scans, pattern analysis across products and cycle data, and an ask feature for product questions.

What does Luminelle do?
Luminelle scans skincare and food product barcodes and scores them from 0-100. Skincare is scored against EU and California regulatory ingredient lists, and packaged food is scored on nutrition, additives and processing. It also tracks calories from meal photos, menstrual cycle phases, keeps a daily journal of skin observations, and daily selfies.
Is Luminelle medical advice?
No. Luminelle is an educational and informational tool, not a medical device. Selfie analysis, ingredient flags, calorie estimates, and cycle predictions are not diagnoses. Users should talk to a qualified healthcare professional for medical guidance.
How is Luminelle different from other ingredient scanners?
Luminelle separates what regulations actually say rather than flagging all listed ingredients. A ban counts whatever the dose, a concentration limit the label cannot prove counts less, and a restriction the label shows does not apply is listed but scores nothing. Every flag links to the regulator's own entry.
How does the product scoring work?
Every cosmetic score is built from public regulatory sources - EU CosIng, California’s cosmetic bills, California Prop 65, and ECHA’s endocrine-disruptor candidate list. Flagged ingredients contribute weight by severity tier. The full rubric is on our Methodology page. Food is scored on nutrition, additives and processing; that method is here.
What if the barcode isn’t recognised?
Switch the scanner to ingredient-list mode and photograph the label. Luminelle reads the INCI list from the photo, matches each name to the regulator entries and scores it the way a barcode scan is scored. Photo scans - an ingredient list, a plate or a food label - are capped at five a day on the free tier; barcode scans are unlimited. You can also submit the missing product from the app so it is added to the catalogue for everyone. Free and Pro are set out here.
